What would be the correct pronunciation for the Italian Family name Ballestrasse in america?
This family name is not very common but it's present in 12 areas of North Italy (Liguria and Piedmont).

It's pronounced "Bahl-leh-str-as-seh"

(double "l" and str. as in street + asse with voiced final "ae")
Reply:The correct pronounciation in Italian is : Bal-le-stas-se

An average American would probably pronounce it as : Bal-le-sta-zi [or] Bali-sta-si [or] Bal-la-sta-se.

I would definetly say that an average American would -pronounce it as "Bal-le-stra-zi" becuase in English "e" usually gets pronounced as its name and not like 猫 as its pronounced in Italian.
Reply:In America it is: BALL - strass

In Germany it is: BAHLL -STRAH-sih (the 'r' is a little gutteral, like in french)

In Italy it is: BALL - eh - STRA - seh ('r' is rolled)
Reply:I think the name you mentioned is actually German. There are German speaking Italians you know. Up in the north. Very tall, very fair, speaking German, and yet Italian.
Reply:In Italian is pronounced: Bahllaestrahssae
Reply:I don't think it is a family name! Probably a nick-family-name
Reply:I am italian :) u have to pronunce it like u read it :D for me its like this...I dunno if u want to know something..just ask me.
