last names grills and canale
Is the last name grills american and is the last name Canale italian or french?
This is what www.ancestry.com had to say about both names.
Grills
English: patronymic from Grill 1.
Canale
Italian: habitational name from any of numerous places called Canale, from Latin canalis ‘channel’, ‘conduit’.
Hope this helps.

Some are natives, some aren't. The one from Newfoundland probably came here because she wanted to exchange chocolate rabbits on Easter; as you know people in Canada do not do that.

Reply:I don't know what you mean by an American surname. I don't believe there is any such thing. The nationality of anyone who is a citizen of the U. S. is American, although they might have different ethnicities. There is no specific American ethnicity.
Also, I am not being defensive because I have been ghetto ised or anything like that.
I am a descendant of colonial ancestors and some that came after the United States was established. I have at least one ancestor that was on the 2nd supply to Jamestown in 1608, and that was BEFORE the Mayflower. Also one family line, according to many people, crossed over an ice bridge from East Asia about 40,000 or more years ago. Still my nationality and my name is no more American than someone who received naturalization today. There is no such thing as a specific American name.
Reply:I don't know about Grills, but Knowing Italian as I do, Canale can be Italian; I cannot exclude other Romance languages.
