Is santa maria a italian name?

my freinds last name is santa maria and hes 100 percent italian, but it sounds spanish or something.

Is santa maria a italian name?
Yes, in a sense it's both Italian and Spanish. Santa Maria refers to the name of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, in various languages such as Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.
Reply:I'm native spanish speaker, and also I speak italian; and I'm sure that Santamaria can be either italian or spanish; Santa Mar铆a (Holy Mary, mother of Jesus) is writen and pronounced exaxctly the same in both languanges. Maybe your friend could be argentinian, they are mostly italians mixed with spaniards.
Reply:i think, yes
Reply:Santa Maria is a tipical Last name of South Italy.

During the 1800 this part of Italy was over the Spanish domination. For this, now,a lot of traditions are very similiar, for example the name and the last name of the people.
