Origins of the Italian name, "Zerbi"?

I would like to know what the origins of the family Italian name "Zerbi" are? Or possibly what this word means in Italian?

Origins of the Italian name, "Zerbi"?
Not sure where some of these answers came from (I don't put a lot of stock in the sites that try to give history of names). Zerbi is a gypsy name. It is very well known amongst those of use who have been dealing with gypsy communities. It isn't isolated to just Italy, it also appears throughout Eastern Europe and the Middle East...wherever gypsies have traveled. It's also a name that every hospital on the north side of Chicago knows to call security when the call comes in from Swedish Covenant Hospital that they're transferring a patient by that name to your facility. Everyone from Security to Admitting to the Nursing Director is put on alert and everything is removed from the room before the ambulance arrives. They can strip a room bare in under 10 mins.

Your family may no longer be gypsy, but I'll guarantee they were somewhere back in time.
Reply:Here is one famous Zerbi for you. You need some good news:

Gabriel Zerbi, philosopher, anatomist, physician; Pre-Vesalian anatomy ... Gabriel Zerbi was born in Verona in 1445 and died in Dalmatia in 1505.

Common enough name in Italy: many cities, also de Zerbi is noted. I also located the name in some Latin texts, early,

so who knows.

Reply:That surname (in Italian 'cogn貌me', 'koh-gn貌-meh' gn=n like in the Spanish word Senorita), has two provenances: one from North and one from South Italy. The first derives from dialectal form of the Italian word "ac猫rbo", singular male form to say "unripe" (ah-ch猫hr-boh). It comes first from Pav矛a city, Lombard矛a region; then it spreads over near all Lombard矛a and other regions. In Lombard矛a, the cities: Mil脿no chief region, Br猫scia (Br猫h-shah), B猫rgamo, M脿ntova; in Piem貌nte, the city Aless脿ndria; in Em矛lia-Rom脿gna, the cities Bol貌gna chief region and M貌dena; in Lig霉ria, the city G猫nova chief region. Zerbi it's a re-translation in Italian of the dialectal form 'z猫rb' (ds猫rb, ds like in diesel). It might be 'Zerbo', singular male form, but it became 'Zerbi', plural male form to connoted a clan, a family.

Second, if it comes from South of Italy, the result is the same, Zerbi, but it derives from the ancient Greek "zerb貌s" (dsehr-b貌hs), that it's "manc矛no" (mahn-ch猫猫-noh) "left-hander". We find it overall in Sic矛lia and Cal脿bria. Ciao.

PS - Sorry, but Zerbinati derives from Zerbi, in fact it means "coming from Zerbi family (or clan).
